Clallam Bay Highway Bridge

 Sekiu, Washington, U.S.A.

In 1995, the State of Washington built a bridge in Clallam Bay using FiRP® Glulam beams.  The bridge is composed of two simple spans, each 24.8 m [81'-3"] long.  It is 8.5 m [28'-0"] wide.

Six girders spaced at 1.6 m [5'-3"] on center are used in each span.  The outside girders are G1 beams, 22 cm wide x 1.5 m deep [8 3/4" x 59"].  The four inside girders are G2 beams, 17 cm wide x 1.5 m deep [6 3/4" x 59"].  Both are constructed from 39 laminations of Douglas Fir.

Each beam is reinforced with four layers of 4 mm [0.15"] thick ARP.  Each G2 beam is reinforced with seven layers of 2 mm [0.07"] thick CARP.  In both the G1 and G2 beams the reinforcement is partial length, 20.7 m [67'-10"] long, centered in the span.

In total, these FiRP® Glulam beams weigh less than one-tenth of the concrete beams that could have been used to span this distance.
